The Town of Marion in Smyth County utilized the Clean Water Revolving Loan Fund to finance over $400,000 in improvements to their biosolids composting facility. The loan closed in May of 2022 and is secured by water and sewer revenues and the general obligation of the Town. Marion’s existing gas waste flare was not operational, and excess methane was released into the atmosphere during peak methane gas production periods. The equipment replacements will allow the gas flare to operate, thereby discharging carbon dioxide and water vapor instead of methane gas. Methane is a greenhouse gas and warms the atmosphere 80 times more than carbon dioxide.
