In April 2021, Western Virginia Water Authority (WVWA) closed on a loan through the Clean Water Revolving Loan Fund to finance updates to the Roanoke Regional Water Pollution Control Plant (WPC Plant) which will allow them to convert biogas produced at the plant into commercial quality renewable natural gas. The first phase of the project consisted of renovating existing anaerobic digestion facilities. Phase 2 of the project utilizes an advanced membrane separation system where raw digester gas will be refined to commercial quality natural gas for use within the greater Roanoke community. The project creates the potential for the protection of the environment and complete recycling of waste at a level only imagined a decade ago.
